Métis Nation British Columbia Senate Initiates Official Duties

(Kelowna, BC) - On Aug. 04-05, 2007, the Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) Senate heard its first four cases in their official role as the judiciary arm of the MNBC. The Senate had to decide on three citizenship appeals and one citizenship challenge as per the MNBC Citizenship Act and the Senate Act. These hearings included the review of the Senate Clerk files, citizenship appeal file, second opinion genealogical report, and both verbal and physical testimony by the applicants and the respondent.

Vancouver, BC - Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) established a Senate Act at the 2005 Annual General Meeting in Fort St. John.

Senate Policy and Procedures

On March 08, 2007 the MNBC Board of Directors ratified the Senate's Policy and Procedures. These procedures have been developed by the Senate over the last 12 months. The Senate's Policy and Procedures now enables the Senate to start conducting business as described within the MNBC Senate Act. The first order of business that the senate has approved is the development of a Senate webpage on the MNBC website. This webpage will outline the process and forms required for an applicant (appellant) to apply to the Senate for an appeal process. The Senate has also appointed an interim Senate Clerk that will assist the Senate on the initial filings of appeal cases, decision notifications and general clerk style work that the Senate will need conducted. The interim Senate Clerk will be the MNBC's Chief of Operations, Dean Trumbley.

On November 23, 2006 the MNBC Senate met at the Vancouver head-office to fine-tune the policy and procedure for the Citizenship Appeal process. The Senate had detailed presentations supplied to them by the MNBC Centralized Registry staff on the citizenship process. This provided the Senate with an intricate understanding of what the MNBC Centralized Registry staff must complete to successfully "validate and verify" a citizen. There were also presentations on the Private Information Protections Act (PIPA), natural justice (conducted by legal counsel) and the citizenship, genealogy and historic documents databases of the MNBC (conducted by Objectified Software, database designers).
